L’histoire entre André-Pierre Gignac et le Mexique n’est donc pas prête de s’arrêter. Après 11 années passées en France, l’ex-Olympien avait décidé de s’exiler chez les Tigres de Monterrey en juin 2015. A désormais 36 ans, l’attaquant français (36 sélections, 7 buts) était convoité par plusieurs clubs en MLS. « Tombé amoureux du Mexique » et d’un club qui l’a propulsé en héros, il a annoncé, au micro de Fox Sports, sa volonté de « terminer sa carrière avec les Tigres ».
« La MLS ? Honnêtement, non. J’ai toujours dit que je voulais terminer ma carrière avec les Tigres. J’ai eu, récemment, des sollicitations, mais je le répète, je veux terminer ma carrière ici parce que je sens que c’est ici que je veux vivre plus tard. »

En fin de contrat en 2024, André-Pierre Gignac aura marqué de son empreinte le club des Tigres UANL. Meilleur buteur européen de l’histoire du championnat mexicain (159 buts inscrits en 280 rencontres), il a gagné 3 fois le tournoi d’ouverture en 2015, 2016 et 2017, 1 tournoi de clôture en 2019 et 2 Supercoupes en 2017 et 2018 au Mexique.
Une aventure sportive et de vie qui se poursuit et qui a inspiré d’autres joueurs français à l’image de Florian Thauvin, arrivé à l’été 2021. Adulé par le public de l’Estadio Universitario, le numéro 10 de l’équipe a mené son club au sommet en remportant la Ligue des champions de la CONCACAF en 2020 face au Los Angeles FC, compétition durant laquelle il a fini meilleur buteur avec 6 réalisations.
